Greater 288 Inaugural Luncheon Serves Up Big Plans For Regional Transportation
June 17, 2010 - Tables were full and expectations were high as nearly 200 area dignitaries and business leaders recently attended the inaugural luncheon of the Greater 288 Partnership at the Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center on Shadow Creek Parkway in Pearland. All attendees left satisfied after a delicious meal and a detailed transportation presentation offered by Texas Department of Transportation Commissioner Ned Holmes, who was guest speaker for the event.
Holmes presented an overview of transportation plans for Texas, funding challenges to bring plans to fruition, and the need for the public and private sector to work together to realize improvements on Highway 288. "The issue is complicated because Hwy 288 lies in both Harris and Brazoria County," Holmes said. "But, eventually I think these projects will require a mixture of public and private funding," reported Holmes.
The Greater 288 Partnership was formed specifically to facilitate that working relationship among all parties involved. Co-founded by former Pearland City Councilmember Kevin Cole, who serves as Chairman of the Board, and Pearland City Councilmember Woody Owens, who serves as Vice Chairman, the Greater 288 Partnership will serve as a key player in helping plan for the future development of the thoroughfare.
"With so many interests served by this gateway from Freeport to Downtown Houston," says Cole, "we believed it was important to create a means by which everyone affected by future development could have a voice and help shape the direction of its expansion and development. We welcome the opportunity to work with Ned Holmes and TXDOT, Houston, Harris County, Brazoria County, and everyone who uses this thoroughfare every day."
The Greater 288 Partnership will host Congressman Pete Olson at its next luncheon on August 18 at the Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center.
